James R. Campbell

James Campbell is a partner at Coffman & Campbell, LLC, an Osage and Coffey County law firm that concentrates in the areas of criminal defense, family law, probate/estate planning and oil and gas law. James practices predominantly in the areas of criminal defense law and oil and gas law.

After graduating from the University of Kansas School of Law, James joined the Emporia firm of Helbert, Bell & Smith, P.C. as an associate. In 1993, he left the firm to take office as the Coffey County Attorney, a position he held until 1997. During that time James also served as Coffey County Counselor and City Attorney for his home town of Yates Center, Kansas.

In 1997, James started the firm, James R. Campbell, Esq. in Burlington, Kansas. James continued in solo practice until 2013 when he joined Coffman & Campbell, LLC as a partner. James has served as the Anderson County Counselor since 1997.

James has extensive trial experience in both the Kansas state courts and the Federal District Court for the District of Kansas. James has done jury trials for civil and criminal cases in the Kansas state courts and criminal jury trials in the Kansas federal courts.

In 2006, James was elected to the Fourth Judicial District Judicial Nominating Committee. This Committee is charged with the nomination of candidates for the judiciary in the district. During his time on the Committee, James has assisted in the selection of several judges for the district.

James was appointed by the Kansas Supreme Court to serve on the Judicial Education Committee for Municipal Judges in 2011. He has been a frequent presenter in CLE presentations at the Kansas Municipal Judges' Conference on topics including Judicial Ethics, Court Administration and evidentiary issues. Additionally, in 2013, the American Bar Association appointed James to serve on the National Conference of Specialized Court Judges, Traffic Court Committee. This committee is charged with planning and organizing a national Traffic Court Seminar.

In 2012, the Kansas Bar Association appointed James to serve on the Kansas Legal Services State Board of Directors. This Board is charged with oversight of Kansas Legal Services, an organization dedicated to providing legal assistance to individuals who may have otherwise been excluded from the protections of our judicial system. James has long been a supporter of providing competent representation for everyone, and has served for years representing indigent individuals in both Coffey and Osage County, Kansas.

James provides continuing support for local art and theater, sponsoring the Burlington High School Theater, as well as the Garnett Community Theater. For over 20 years, he has served as a member of the Executive Committee for the Hidden Haven Church Camp in Thayer, Kansas where he served as Chairman for 3 years.

James and his wife Tracy have been married for 24 years, living the last 20 in a century old house in Burlington. They have have two grown sons.

In his spare time, James enjoys cooking, travel and the theater. Combining those activities, James likes to search out and try new and interesting restaurants when traveling.

James is a member of the American Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Association, the Osage County Bar Association, Coffey County Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys and the Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. Additionally, James is a past president and member of the Kansas Municipal Judges' Association.
